What day is it?

No one seems to know.

Well, everyone knows the date and that it is a day off work.

But why?

Davið told me that today was the day the Jesus got went to Heaven. Is this right?

This sounds significant, like Christmas, but everyone knows about Christmas.

Maybe Davið is wrong, this is not his area of expertise or anything.

I asked about a dozen people what was going on. Many schools are even having a 4 day weekend. All anyone tells me is it is a paid day off, I guessed as much, and that most things are closed (or at the very most only open Sunday hours).

Well, what ever the reason, I am not complaining, just curious.

It's Pentecost. That's the day when Jesus went back to heaven and the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and sent out to tell the world about Jesus' resurrection. (Check the first few chapters of Acts of the Apostles for the details.)

It's celebrated 40 days after Easter Sunday. In Canada, it's celebrated mostly by Catholic, Orthodox and some Anglican Christians.
